What could you have expected more than this? An IPL edition which is hardly couple of days away from the play-offs still hasn't concluded which four teams would feature in the play-offs. That is the most interesting part this year. And hence we call it "the most open IPL we have ever seen!".


Delhi and Kolkata are already through to the next stage. Chennai has finished all its games but they are still in contention. If Bangalore and Punjab lose their matches then Chennai is through to the next level. Yesterday's match which resulted in Rajasthan's loss has almost ensured that Mumbai is through to the play-offs with very thin probability that they can be knocked out from here on.


1st Match - Delhi Daredevils vs Kings XI Punjab 


Kings XI Punjab were no where in contention till the first half of the round robin stage. They have drastically improved their performance in the second half of this league. They comprehensively defeated the defending champions Chennai in the last match or else Chennai was through to the next stage. Last match also marked the return of Gilchrist in style. He scored majority of the runs for his team to win against Chennai.


Punjab has come up this time with unlikely stars viz. Awana, Mandeep Singh and Gurkeerat Singh. Shaun Marsh and David Hussey have equally provided good knocks. As far as bowling department is concerned Awana, Praveen Kumar, Ryan Harris and Piyush Chawla can cause trouble to the strong batting line up of Delhi. 


Delhi Daredevils suffered a big loss against Royal Challengers Bangalore in the last match. In the absence of Virender Sehwag and Morne Morkel, the team looked dull. Bangalore especially Chris Gayle hammered the bowling line up. Delhi may bounce back to register a win here against Punjab and keep the hopes of Chennai alive.


2nd Match - Kolkata Knight Riders and Pune Warriors India


Although Pune Warriors are already eliminated and Kolkata Knight Riders are already through to the play-offs, this match still holds a big importance. Simply because this match features Sourav Ganguly. This could be probably his last match in IPL and he would be fortunate enough to play his last one against his home team. 


Pune Warriors have lost 8 matches on the trot and they are lingering somewhere at the bottom of the table with Deccan Chargers. With nothing to gain from this match, they would play for pride. A win over Kolkata Knight Riders will be a consolation for them before they end this year's IPL journey. 


Meanwhile the player to watch out today would certainly be Sunil Narine. His balls are mysterious and unplayable at times. The way he bowled Sachin Tendulkar was absolutely a delight to watch. He too 4 wickets giving away just 15 runs. On the other hand Kolkata has a strong batting line up consisting of Gautam Gambhir, McCullum and Kallis. The only worry for the batting line up is its over dependancy on Gautam Gambhir's performance.

1st Match:- Mumbai Indians vs Chennai Super Kings

It is pretty obvious that the stadium has to be housefull when IPL's most popular team Mumbai Indians take on the defending champions Chennai Super Kings. There is a striking similarity between these two teams and that is "inconsistency". Both these teams have a lot of "match turners" but inconsistency has not allowed these teams to dominate this edition of IPL.

Mumbai Indians have certainly not performed to their potential and so is the case of Chennai Super Kings. MI has to win atleast 3 to 4 matches of their remaining 6 to make a place in the play-offs. Sachin Tendulkar has provided good starts to the innings but he couldn't convert his small scores into big ones. Rohit Sharma has been inconsistent throughout the tournament whereas Rayudu has been the most consistent guy with the bat. Mumbai's bowling has the upper hand. Lasith Malinga has clinched 17 wickets from only 7 matches as he missed out few due to an injury. Pragyan Ojha has been a good support to Malinga.

Chennai Super Kings registered a win against Deccan Chargers lately before they suffered some big blows at home. Chennai's batting highlight this year has been their overseas player Faf du Plesis. He has gathered 376 runs so far and is in the race of orange cap. Murali Vijay seems to have gained his lost form whereas Morkel and Bravo has always been a good contributor to the side with bat and ball. A lot is expected from Dhoni, Raina and Hussey if CSK has to thump Mumbai in Mumbai.

2nd Match - Royal Challengers Bangalore vs Deccan Chargers

Deccan Chargers has always seen themselves at the bottom of points tally this year and now they take on the most fancied team of 2012 viz. Royal Challengers Bangalore. RCB finished runner ups last year and this year they haven't been able to repeat those winning performances.

Royal Challengers is a team which deserves a much better position than 7th on points tally. They are in the group of those teams who are sitting in bottom half of the table and eager to win all the matches they play. So this match is vital for RCB and they need to win this one. Again a lot depends on the performance of Zaheer Khan, Chris Gayle, Dilshan, Vettori and AB de Villiers. If this is a day of Virat Kohli then no one can snatch away a victory from RCB because when he gets going its almost impossible to stop him. He is still in search of his lost good form.

Deccan Chargers have nothing to lose and they can very well play the role of spoiling other's parties. Every match they win now on will shatter dreams of other team's to make into the knock out stages of IPL. Cameron White is in an emphatic form and so is Kumar Sangakkara.  We can't write off brilliant bowling of Dale Steyn as well. 

Although Royal Challengers look favourites to clinch this one, we won't be surprised if Deccan Chargers can pull out a surprise here and turn tables on Royal Challengers Bangalore.

On one hand defending champions Chennai loses another match and on the other hand team that finished at the bottom last year viz. Delhi Daredevils proudly stands on the top of points tally so far! Credit goes to Delhi for their superb all round performance so far. We have two matches today where two teams would seek revenge. 1st Match: Delhi Daredevils vs Rajasthan Royals

Three defeats on the trot has been a major setback for Rajasthan Royals. Especially the last defeat was heart breaking for Rajasthan as they lost it by just one run against Delhi Daredevils. As mentioned in the earlier posts, Rajasthan batting line up depends a lot on the openers Rahul Dravid, Ajinkya Rahane and also on Owais Shah. As Shane Watson has finished his tour to West Indies, he has joined Rajasthan Royals and may replace Kevin Cooper who is injured. Watson can bowl well and also add value to the batting line up if he can come on position 3 or 4.

Eyes would be set again on Virender Sehwag who has four half centuries on his name in this year's IPL. David Warner joins the team which makes the team even stronger. Once Kevin Pietersen leaves for his international commitments, hopefully Warner will fill his space. Pietersen has played a very vital role in Delhi's wins so far. The biggest success for Delhi this year has been Morne Morkel. He has 18 wickets to his name and the 'purple cap' too! Irfan Pathan and Umesh Yadav provide a good supporting role to Morne Morkel.

2nd Match: Deccan Chargers vs Pune Warriors 

 Pune Warriors have a story similar to Rajasthan Royals. Fans had least expectations from them but they turned out to be one of the most successful teams in first half of IPL 2012. But now both these teams have tasted few defeats which has brought a setback in their camp.

Pune Warriors travels to Cuttack to play Deccan Chargers after suffering a loss back home against the Chargers. They lost by 18 runs thus being the only team to lose against Deccan Chargers. Pune Warriors would hate to lose their winning momentum and they need few wins to ensure their position in the play-offs.

Deccan Chargers have lost everything except one match and one rain wash out. They have nothing to lose and as mentioned earlier, they can play biggest role of party spoilers! Two players in best of their forms from  Chargers are Shikhar Dhawan and Dale Steyn. One has single handedly managed to score freely and the other had clinched wickets without any firm support from rest of the bowling departmen.

Overall both the matches would be interesting as one team from each match is thirsty for a revenge and badly looking for a victory to move up in the points tally.

His 39 balls 73 runs innings against Mumbai Indians was a treat to watch. Kevin Pieterson who won't be playing too long for Delhi as he has to be a part of the series between England and West Indies, has also been in splendid form with the bat. He has played a vital role so far in Delhi's wins. Lately Delhi bowlers have given away loads of runs and things need to be strategised as far as bowling is concerned.


Rajasthan Royals have been a bit off track after getting a very good start to the tournament. Batting has depended a lot on openers Rahul Dravid and Ajinkya Rahane. The only other batsman who has been consistent is Owais Shah with 278 runs to his name. Bowling deparment has been more consistent. Apart from being a handy batsman, Kevin Cooper has bowled well to clinch 10 wickets in IPL 2012. Brad Hogg has been very good with his chinamen deliveries which are unplayable at times.


Delhi Daredevils being the team to beat nowadays seems to be the favourites for this match against Rajasthan Royals. So the prediction goes in favour of Delhi Daredevils who would also be a better knowledgeable team at their home ground.


2nd Match:- Mumbai Indians vs Deccan Chargers


Mumbai Indians are seeking redemption as they host Deccan Chargers. Mumbai Indians have suffered two heavy losses against Delhi Daredevils and its time for them to click form before its too late and they are out of the race for the play-offs.


Deccan Chargers have been the most out of form team this year and now they can play a role of spoiling parties for teams who are doing well. Mumbai Indians with 3 losses out of their last 4 matches eye their best opportunity to gain the lost form if they can beat Deccan Chargers in Mumbai.


Deccan Chargers clinched their first win of IPL 2012 against Pune Warriors and who knows this can bring them back in form! A team just needs one win sometimes to change the fortunes. Will Deccan Charger be able to capitalise on that win still remains a big question. With the likes of Tendulkar, Harbhajan, Franklin, Pollard, Malinga and Rayudu, Mumbai Indians seems to be the favourites tonight but Deccan Chargers will play without any pressure and hence they may find themselves in the driver's seat!

After pulling off a motivational win against Kolkata, Punjab would be a much more confident team today. Sunil Narine trouble the batting unit of Punjab when they met last. Punjab will have to come up with some strategy today against Narine. Shaun Marsh looks in good touch and he would gain the support of David Hussey and Mascarenhas in the batting unit. A lot depends on Adam Gilchrist's batting as well since he opens the innings for Punjab. 


Kolkata needs to get out of their old losing ways. They need to strengthen their middle order which seems to be very fragile. Kallis and Gambhir would open the innings and looking at some out of form batsmen, probably McCullum or Morgan would be included in today's match. 


Pitch here at Mohali still has a good amount of grass on it. So we can conclude a good day for the quick bowlers out there. Presence of grass can bother the batsmen at times with some bouncers. But overall it also brings ball on to the bat comfortably thus providing a good timing in stroke play.

The Pune Warriors led by Sourav Ganguly has got a better start to their IPL campaign this year when compared to last year. Ganguly finally looked in a good touch in the last match and he should carry forward the momentum in this match. Ashok Dinda has been very impressive for Pune Warriors. He has the support of Ashish Nehra and Rahul Sharma. Pune should not pitch in 8 batsmen because that results in a bowler short. Murali Karthik should get an opportunity.


Chennai Super Kings were comprehensively outbeaten by Delhi Daredevils but we all know how hard Chennai can bounce back. Chasing 205 was just like pulling a rabbit out of the hat! Faf du Plessis laid the foundation of this chase; Dhoni and Morkel completed the winning cause. They have other hard hitting batsmen like Murali Vijay, Bravo and highest run scorer in IPL viz. Suresh Raina.


Chennai's bowling unit failed miserably against Bangalore giving away 205 runs in 20 overs. But overall they are one of the best bowlers in the league. With the likes of Bollinger, Bravo, Morkel, Ashwin, Jadeja and Jakati; Dhoni would always feel comfortable.


Pitch here has a slow nature and probably would suit the spinners more than the quickies. So no wonder if both the teams pitch in atleast two specialist spinners. Chennai looks favourite for this match and they may pull in a comfortable win in Pune.

IPL 2012 Treats Us With Wonderful Matches

IPL 2012 is still into its infant stage but it has provided a lot of nail biters. Mumbai Indians looks one of the strongest teams on paper but they still lack the killer instinct. Especially after the finger injury to Sachin Tendulkar, the team looks under pressure. The latest good win for them came against Deccan Chargers with a last ball sixer from Rohit Sharma. The star for Deccan Chargers so far has been Dale Steyn who proves his worth as the best fast bowler in the current cricket world.


There are many eye catching fixtures to be followed. In the next five to seven matches atleast the strongest team on field could be derived. So far Rajasthan Royals under the leadership of Rahul Dravid and Pune Warriors under the leadership of Sourav Ganguly looks inspiring. But as many international players are joining their respective teams slowly, the balance may shift to other teams and hence the leaders in the points tally would shuffle as well.


As far as the individual performances are concerned after the conclusion of nine matches; the batsman with most number of runs is Ajinkya Rahane (98 runs). K Cooper from Rajasthan again leads the wickets tally with 7 wickets to his name. He is equalled by Malinga from Mumbai Indians with 7 wickets.


This is still a very early stage of Indian Premier League and there are many flip flops to follow. We would see a lot of turn arounds and shuffling positions in the points table as the league progresses.

The first match will be followed by a match between Kolkata Knight Riders and Delhi Daredevils on 5th April. Two matches are scheduled on 6th of April - Mumbai Indians vs Pune Warriors which would be a must watch match for Ganguly's fans; and Rajasthan Royals vs Kings Eleven Punjab.

Most Runs in IPL:

Suresh Raina holds the record of most runs in IPL so far. He has scored 1813 runs in 62 matches and 60 innings. He averages 36.26 with a strike rate of 140.32. He is yet to hit a century in IPL but he has 13 half centuries to his name. He is followed by Sachin Tendulkar who has scored 1723 runs in 51 matches and 51 innings with a strike rate of 120.15 (10 half centuries and a century).

Most Sixes in IPL:

Adam Gilchrist has hit maximum number of sixex in IPL history so far. He has 82 sixes to his name in 60 innings. He is followed by Suresh Raina who has hit 78 sixes in 60 innings. Yusuf Pathan stands on 3rd position with 53 sixes. The surprise factor is Chris Gayle who is on 4th position with 70 sixes but only in 28 innings which is phenomenal.

Most Runs in an IPL season:

Sachin Tendulkar tops the list with 618 runs in 2009/10 season. He played 15 innings, hit 5 half centuries and scored 618 runs at an average of 47.53. He is followed by Shaun Marsh who scored 616 runs in 2007/08 season with an average of 68.44 (5 half centuries and a century)

Highest Individual scores in IPL:

B McCullum played an astonishing innings when he scored 158 not out on 18th April 2008. This stands to be the highest individual score in IPL history. He faced only 73 balls and hit 10 fours and 13 sixes. He is followed by Murali Vijay who scored 127 runs on 3rd April 2010 facing 56 balls. He scored 8 fours and 11 sixes.

IPL 2012 Schedule

Indian Premiere League's 5th edition kicks off from 4th of April 2012. A cricket festival which would last till 27th May 2012 consisting of 76 matches. Wasn't the 1st qualifier a pure nail biter? Yes it was! The way CSK changed gears after 10 overs to clinch a surprising win against RCB was just astonishing. CSK has already earned a place in the finals and proved their worth of being the defending champions. RCB isn't eliminated yet as they will now play the winner of today's eliminator MI Vs KKR. The team that loses today will be eliminated from IPL 2011.

These two teams last met just couple of days ago when things were pretty much in KKR's pockets. But unfortunately Balaji leaked too many runs in the last over to give away the match to MI. A brave effort from MI to win that one. Tonight MI plays in their home ground with a huge fan support coming along their way. A win here in a sort of virtual quarter final would bring a festive mood in Mumbai.

MI had completely dominated the first half of this year's IPL with 8 wins from their first 10 matches. In the later stages they lost three matches due to which they lost the top position in the points tally. A win against KKR in the last round robin match took them to the 3rd position. For Mumbai Indians, the batting responsibility depends a lot on Sachin Tendulkar, Rohit Sharma and Ambati Rayudu. Power hitters like Pollard and Symonds haven't impressed much with their batting. Bowling looks very good with Malinga, Harbhajan and Munaf in good form.

KKR could have easily made to the first qualifier toppling CSK if they would have just managed a win against MI in their last match. Overall, this team has performed better than expectations. Gambhir being the new captain for this side, has led from the front. Kallis, Tiwary and Pathan has played a vital role too. Bowling needs to improve a bit in crunch times.

RCB Vs CSK Live - This qualifier will decide the first finalist today

Royal Challengers Bangalore and Chennai Super Kings being the top two teams this year in IPL, will play against each other in the 1st Qualifier. The loser tonight will play against the winner of Mumbai Indians Vs Kolkata Knight Riders match. An added advantage as it provides one more chance to enter the final.

About 80 percent of the total IPL tickets are with the IPL franchise owners. Remaining quota of tickets stays with IPL organisers.

IPL live scores - Mumbai Indians beat Deccan Chargers by 41 runs

Mumbai Indians are on fire this season. They now have 5 wins from 6 matches and they are on the top of the points table with 10 points.

At the D Y Patil Stadium here in New Mumbai, Mumbai Indians registered a comprehensive win over a strong Deccan Chargers team. Mumbai Indians scored 172 runs for 7 wickets with again Sachin scoring a brilliant 55 from 43 balls. A lightning 49 runs off just 18 balls by Harbhajan Singh helped the team to reach a high challenging score.

Deccan Chargers could never manage to have a fruitful partnership in their innings with wickets falling at regular intervals. They were bowled out for 131 with Rohit Sharma scoring 45 from 28 balls.

T20 Cricket Records - Down The Memory Lane - Fastest 50 in T20 cricket

Let me take you to the inaugural T20 World Championship which was played in South Africa. The day was 19th September 2007, when India took on England in a day and night encounter at Kingsmead, Durban, South Africa.

India won the toss and chose to bat first. India got a flying start with Gautam Gambhir and Virendar Sehwag smashing English bowlers all over the park. Gautum Gambhir scored 58 from 41 balls while Sehwag smashed 68 from just 52 balls with three sixes to his name. Things were not done yet. One man in the Indian camp had different thoughts in his mind. He came out with a mindset to score maximum of each ball he should face. The man was Yuvraj Singh.

His batting was an absolute treat to watch that day. Indians would have been jumping on their seats when they would have seen this man batting that day. He smashed 50 runs from just 12 balls. Fastest 50 in T20 cricket (fastest even if we take the 50 overs format into consideration). Most exciting about his fifty was, he smashed 6 towering sixes in 6 consecutive balls when Stuart Broad was the bowler at the receiving end. Yuvraj Singh was caught by Collingwood on 58 runs (14 balls, 3 boundaries and 7 sixes).

India ended up at a huge score of 218 in 20 overs. England reply was quiet resolute but they fell short of just 18 runs. They managed a respectable 200 runs in their 20 overs, Vikram Solanki being the highest scorer for them (43 from 31 balls). Irfan Pathan took 3 wickets for India.

India's triumph didn't end here. They went on to the finals to beat Pakistan and lift the inaugural T20 World Cup.
