Update: Chennai wins and marches ahead into the finals against Kolkata

It is nothing less than a semi final for Chennai Super Kings and Delhi Daredevils. Simply because the one who wins enters the finals and the other flies back home. Kolkata Knight Riders have already entered the finals for the first time ever and they are busy preparing themselves for the grand match. Meanwhile they will also have a close eye on this qualifier where they would have separate strategies for both the teams.

Delhi Daredevils has almost dominated most of their oppositions through out and reigned over position one in the points tally. But they lost to Kolkata Knight Riders in the first qualifier or they would have been in the finals by now. After the loss, Delhi may feel like making changes in the playing eleven. 

Certainly the onus is on the Delhi openers Sehwag and Warner. These two are swashbuckling batsmen who can tear apart any bowling line up in the world. If they fail Delhi may find themselves in deep trouble. Middle order is strong with the likes of Jayawardene and Naman Ojha. Injury to Irfan Pathan has been a loss for Delhi Daredevils. Shahbaz Nadeem can play if Irfan isn't fit enough to make into the playing eleven. Umesh Yadav, Varun Aaron and Morne Morkel are the corner stones of Delhi's bowling line up.

Chennai Super Kings are most fancied team if we talk about the final stages of IPL. They are well known of playing better if they make it into the final four. And that was evident in their last match when they eliminated Mumbai with a comprehensive over them at Bangalore. Chennai smashed 187 and Mumbai never looked like chasing it. MS Dhoni struck form again on the right time and scored a quick 50. The Bangalore crowd could also enjoy his big hit out of the ground which measured 112 meters (also happens to be the biggest six of IPL 2012). Michael Hussey and Badrinath were other two good scorers apart from Dhoni and a good support in the end by Bravo.

Chennai has a good batting line up with the likes of Hussey, Murali Vijay, Suresh Raina, Badrinath, Dhoni, etc. It is simply the return of Mr. Cricket Michael Hussey that Chennai's highest score this year Faf du Plesis has to sit out. But that is well justified keeping in mind the overall experience of Michael Hussey. Bowling unit is currently led by Australian pace man Hilfenhaus. Morne Morkel and Bravo are another quickies in the team. Ashwin, Jadeja and Jakati are spin options for MS Dhoni. 

Wicket's nature here at Chepauk is too hard to predict. But there is a possibility that the track may support spin bowling keeping in mind the home team bowling strength. As this is a do or die match for both the teams we all can expect a cracker of a contest.

IPL 2012 finally has its four top teams to feature in the play-offs. The format doesn't consist of semifinals but play-offs which is fair for top two teams and more interesting ofcourse. Top two teams viz. Delhi and Kolkata plays in the 1st Qualifier at Subrata Roy Sahara Stadium, Pune. The winner of this match will directly qualify for the finals to be played at Chennai. The team that would lose this qualifier would play the winner of eliminator match (Mumbai vs Chennai). That would be the second qualifier and the winner will qualify for the finals.

Delhi has topped the table and has easily been the most dominating team of IPL 2012. Kolkata Knight Riders were separated just by one point as one of the matches of KKR was washed out due to rain. Although these two teams have registered comprehensive wins throughout but few losses in the final phase of IPL has been an eye opener for them. 

Twenty20 being a format of cricket which consists only 20 overs, the opening stand plays a vital role. We have some explosive openers in both the teams - Sehwag and Warner for Delhi - Gambhir and McCullum for Kolkata. Virender Sehwag scored five consecutive half centuries and Pieterson played a very important role in Delhi's wins before he left for England vs West Indies test series. Warner played an explosive innings in the league matches where he scored a quickfire ton. McCullum couldn't manage a big score for Kolkata so far but we all know his explosive batting. Gambhir has scored the majority of runs for Kolkata Knight Riders.

This match would also display a tight competition between two bowling sides. Especially a performance clash between KKR's Narine and DD's Morkel. These bowlers have caused lot of trouble to the opposition team and have clinched a lot of wickets. Meanwhile there are other good players in both the teams to watch out viz. Jayawardene, Taylor, Brett Lee, Kallis, etc.

Statistically both these teams have done a good job in their own ways. Delhi Daredevils have lost only 76 wickets in their 15 league matches of IPL 2012. They have scored at a rate of 8.3 runs per over. Meanwhile KKR has been the most economical bowling unit in IPL 2012. 

Pune's wicket may not produce a very high scoring game but certainly it will provide a good tussle between bat and the ball. Let us see which of these heavyweights to clinch a win and register a place in the IPL 2012 finals.
